Kwe' - Hello and Welcome
Dr. Shane Young, he/him, is a Registered Social Worker (Ontario), educator, researcher, and activist-scholar whose work brings together critical Indigenous studies, social work, digital culture, and community-engaged practice. Of Mi’kmaw and Newfoundland settler ancestry, Shane’s scholarship is rooted in relationality, decolonization, and a commitment to Indigenous resurgence.

His doctoral research explored how social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok shape Indigenous identity formation, belonging, and relationality in digital spaces. His current research builds on this work by examining Indigenous digital mentorship as a site of cultural continuity, intergenerational knowledge sharing, and Indigenous futurity.

Shane is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work and the Academic Coordinator of the Indigenous Knowledge and Experiences Certificate Program at Toronto Metropolitan University. Across his teaching, research, and community work, he is committed to Indigenous-centered and transformative approaches that support learning, connection, and social change.
In addition to his academic roles, Shane remains actively engaged as a social work practitioner, consultant, and trainer, bringing his lived experiences and professional knowledge to every aspect of his work

Originally from the southwestern coast of Newfoundland, he has called Tkaronto home since 2006.
